Waffenmuseum
Reise (Danville, VA)
The AAF
Tank Museum was founded in 1981 as a 501 (c) 3 not for profit charitable
organization, with a mission to educate, collect, restore, preserve, and
display as varied a collection of military tank and cavalry artifacts as
is possible, so that present and future generations will have a
significant part of military history available for them to learn from and
explore. The museum is home to 115
Tanks & Artillery pieces including a U.S. M4A3E8 Sherman, M5A1 Stuart,
German Mark IV, & a Russian T34 tank. Also on display are
various Machine Guns, Mortars, Flame Throwers, Recoilless Rifles, Rocket
Launchers, small arms, etc... as well as various selected uniforms &
equipment.
Once again we
traveled south to the AAF Tank Museum for its 4th Annual Military Extravaganza.
This year we set up a display showing the average German infantryman's
equipment and personal items as would have been seen in Normandie just
prior to the allied invasion. The museum was also kind enough to
allow us to demonstrate the workings of their original Pak 41 antitank gun
& crew their German Mark IV tank. The event was a success and
was fun for all. One of our members portraying a tanker even won the
"Best Military Dress" contest. They said his clothing,
stance, & overall look was right out of the history book.
